Metropole and Roy Bolks wave goodbye to the last amphibious tour through the canals of Amsterdam
On a summer day in July 2024, Amsterdam turned into a spectacular stage for the last time. More than a hundred amphibious vehicles from eleven countries gathered here for their last ride. The amphicars were allowed to drive and sail for the streets and canals of Amsterdam for the last time. They provided a beautiful sight against the backdrop of the beautiful Amsterdam canals.
Roy Bolks as organizer of the amphicar tour
As organizer of this unique event, Roy had the pleasure of welcoming more than a hundred amphibious vehicles, each vehicle with its own unique character. This atmosphere created an unforgettable spectacle on both the Amsterdam streets and the canals.
The end of an era
This special day marked the last time that our amphibious vehicles were allowed to drive and sail through the historic waters of Amsterdam. The beautiful amphicar 770 and many more beautiful cars were launched for the last time in Amsterdam. Due to new environmental regulations in Amsterdam, these charming vehicles will no longer be welcome in the city from 2025. “It is with pride that I was able to organize this event for the last time.”
Why is this the last time?
This was the last time our amphibious vehicles explored the Amsterdam canals. From 2025, the municipality of Amsterdam will impose stricter environmental requirements, meaning that only emission-free vehicles will be allowed on the water. Unfortunately, these new regulations no longer make it possible for us to continue the tradition. So this event marks a farewell to a beloved tradition.
What next with the amphicar?
After the farewell in Amsterdam, the Amphicars could still be admired in Monnickendam and Utrecht. These were the last chances to see these unique vehicles in action before they leave Amsterdam for good. After almost thirty years, this beloved tradition is ending, but we conclude with a feeling of satisfaction and gratitude. The Amphicars will no longer sail through the urban waters of Amsterdam, fortunately the unique cars can still be seen at the Metropole car museum in Druten.

What makes the amphibious car so special?
De amphicar 770 was a unique vehicle produced in the 1960s. It was an amphibious vehicle, meaning it could travel on land as well as in water. The name “770” referred to its ability to reach 7 miles per hour in the water and 70 miles per hour on land.
The Amphicar was produced in West Germany between 1961 and 1968. It was a striking car that runs on water. This was extremely rare at the time (and still is today). Even with these unique features, the auto boat unfortunately failed to become commercially successful, and only about 4.000 units were produced each surviving amphibious car for sale represents a piece of postwar ingenuity.
Nowadays, the sailing cars have become collector's items due to their rarity and unique design.
