Mercedes 300 sl Gullwing
De Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gull Wing is not only a technical achievement, but also a masterpiece of design. What immediately stands out are the flowing lines and the timeless appearance. Even today, the cars are often mistaken for much more modern models. The characteristic gullwing doors immediately catch the eye and make the nickname “Gullwing” more than logical. But this design is not only beautiful, it is also functional. The doors provide access to the innovative tubular frame, while the bonnet bumps provide space for the powerful engine.
Everything about the Gullwing SL 300 is well thought out and executed with precision. From the anodized aluminum beltlines to the subtle bodywork details, every part has a function. Despite being built on a production line in Sindelfingen, most of the assembly was done by hand.
Mercedes 300 sl Roadster
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster (W198), produced between 1957 and 1963, is one of the most iconic convertibles ever built. This Benz SL Roadster, successor to the legendary Gullwing, combined the sporty performance of its predecessor with the pleasure of open-top driving. The popularity of two-seaters in the late 50s led Mercedes to decide to introduce an open version of the MB 300 SL. The result was the 300 SL Roadster, a high-performance sports car that offered the epitome of luxury and driving pleasure.
The 300 SL Roadster not only had a stylish appearance, but also important technical improvements. The new design of the rear axle provided better handling, and from 1961 this model was the first production car from Mercedes-Benz to feature disc brakes on all four wheels. This significantly improved braking performance, which was essential for a sports car of this calibre.
Underneath the bodywork, the spaceframe remained the core of the car, as in the Gullwing, but with some modifications. The new frame allowed for conventional doors, making entry and exit easier. Furthermore, unlike the Coupé, the Roadster offered a proper trunk, further increasing its ease of use.
The 300 SL Roadster was not only designed for speed, but also for comfort. Mercedes-Benz offered an optional hardtop, ideal for colder weather conditions. A total of 1.858 units of the Roadster were built, making it a rare collector's item.
