Description
The Isabella was designed by Carl Borgward and was presented on June 12, 1954. [source?] After eliminating the teething problems, it turned out to be an extremely reliable car that sold well. Because Borgward suddenly encountered financial problems in 1961, production stopped that year, after which the production line was sold to Fabrica Nacional de Automoviles S.A. in Monterrey (on Mexico). From 1967 until its bankruptcy in 1970, it produced the Borgward P100, called the Borgward 230 in Mexico.
The Borgward Isabella had a self-supporting body, a 4-cylinder in-line engine of 1493cc and rear-wheel drive. The fully synchronized four-speed gearbox was operated with a hydraulic clutch.
There were four versions: sedan, station wagon, coupe and convertible. The last two were sold exclusively in the TS version, with an engine that delivered 75 hp, instead of the standard 60 hp engine.
