Leaflets
Another Italian F3 constructor whose roots were in Formula Junior. They built an FJ wagon in 1958 and continued to use it into 1959, although compared to cars like the Cooper it was already outdated when it was announced. An F3 car was produced in 1964 and the Foglietti name continued to appear on the Italian F3 grids until 1971, but many of these cars were likely updates of an earlier chassis rather than a new car.
Mr. Ernesto Foglietti worked in 1958 in his Fiat workshop on Via Montegani, just a few hundred meters from Milan city center and the famous Duomo, on his first Formula car for the new Formula Junior. His first design was quite unconventional with a tubular chassis and an offset mounted Fiat 1100 engine and gearbox allowing the drive to pass to the right of the cockpit. The next generation of Foglietti Formula Juniors were already rear-engined and used Fiat or DKW engines and were raced successfully in the Italian Formula Junior Championship. Up to 6 Foglietti cars took part in the races of the 1961 and 1962 seasons.
For the 1963 season, Foglietti developed a new, quite revolutionary car. The combined tubular chassis with centrally mounted tank was fitted with a very sleek and aerodynamic body, largely made of modern materials for that time. The front suspension was a revolutionary system with reaction arms and internal springs and shock absorbers. This reduced frontal area and unsprung mass. Brakes where there is a state-of-the-art Girling Lockeed mix. The most shocking (for a Fiat “Concessionare like Foglietti) was the choice of a Ford Cosworth engine. But Foglietti was well aware that this was a must to build a frontrunner in Formula Junior. Only two cars were built. Foglietti then built a number of Formula 3 and Formula Ford cars, but stopped in the late XNUMXs
1964
In 1964, a neat, if conventional, Ford-engined F3 chassis was built (although the front suspension appeared to have a push-rod) and was driven by Antonio Ascari Jr. (son of Alberto). A number of top six places were achieved during the year.
