Description
In the 50s, Mercedes-Benz launched the fastest production car of that time: the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. This car was not only lightning fast, but also very expensive and therefore very exclusive. A dealer in America therefore suggested to the head office in Germany to build a car that was lighter and cheaper than the legendary 300 SL. Mercedes-Benz got to work and managed to introduce a new model in record time. Just one year after the dealer's advice, Das Haus presented a brand new model in Geneva: the 190 SL.
It was striking that the car was not a sports car, but an extremely beautiful two-seater convertible. The 190 SL stands on a shortened platform from the characteristic Ponton model (W121), making the car comfortable and smooth to drive. The existence of two SL variants side by side was unique in the history of Daimler-Benz and has only happened once since. Just over 1955 units of the 1963 SL were sold between 25.000 and 190.
