In 1998, the top class G 500 with a 296 hp V8 was introduced for series production.
For 1999, a limited run of V8-powered “G 500 Classic” special editions marked the model's 20th anniversary. All models received a multifunction steering wheel. Later in the year, the new G 55 AMG debuted as the most powerful G-Class to date, with 354 hp. The American market introduction of the G-Class took place in 2001. New alloy wheels, a chrome grille and bumpers in body color plus a more luxurious interior were introduced. New dynamic control systems include the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Brake Assist and the four-wheel electronic traction system (4 ETS). The G 55 AMG was upgraded in 2004 with a supercharged V8 engine producing 476 hp.
For the 2016 model year, the outgoing M273 5,5-litre naturally aspirated V8 fitted to the G 500/G 550 replaced by the new M176 4,0-liter biturbo V8 for more horsepower and torque.
This version of the Mercedes-Benz G-class was delivered in the Netherlands from July 2015 to January 2018. The four-wheel drive car has a petrol engine and delivers a maximum power of 310 kW (422 hp) and a maximum torque of 610 Nm. According to the manufacturer, the average consumption is 13,8 l/100km (1 in 7,2).
