The Targa version
De Plate is the semi-open body of Porsche:
-
Removable roof panel
-
Stainless steel roll bar behind the chairs
-
Rear window (glass or sometimes plastic on early models)
This gave a convertible feel but with greater body rigidity and safety. The Targa was very popular in the 70s.
The unique feature of 1972: the “Ölklappe”
The most special thing about the 1972-911 is the oil filler cap in the right rear fender.
Why Porsche did that:
-
De oil tank was moved forward (for the rear wheel)
-
This caused the weight to increase within the wheelbase
-
This improved the balance and handling of the car
But there was a problem:
At gas stations that valve was often confused with the gas cap, which caused people to pour gasoline into the oil tank. Therefore, the system was discontinued after just one model year (1973).
Because of this, 1972 models with the “Ölklappe” are now very sought after by collectors.
Technology and driving feel
Typical of early 911s:
-
Air-cooled engine with mechanical injection (MFI)
-
Engine completely in the back
-
Torsion bar suspension
-
Heel light and mechanical driving feel
Many enthusiasts find the 2.4-liter 911s (1972-1973) one of the best classic 911 generations because they are more powerful but still have the pure character of the early models.
