amphicar 770

The Amphicar (introduced as Eurocar) was the life's work of car designer Hans Trippel (1908-2001), who was involved in making amphibious vehicles until an old age. The Amphicar is the only amphibious car that was produced in series, at least for private use. The bodywork came from West Berlin, the engine from England and parts even came from (the former) East Germany. The car was assembled in (the western part of) Berlin.

3878 copies were produced, sales were disappointing, partly due to the high price of more than 10.000 German marks. Also, the Amphicar was not a comfortable car and its road performance was not very good, with a top speed of 105 km/h on land and 12 km/h on water. Due to the lack of a rudder, you had to 'simply' steer with the front wheels, so that the 'boat' was not very manoeuvrable. In addition, the car was not absolutely waterproof and a trip on the water required a lot of maintenance. Yet an Amphicar managed to cross the Channel in 1962.

In 1967 one of the most important investors died. And when American legislation was made stricter in 1968, the curtain fell.

The car was available in four colors. It had a modified Porsche gearbox and a Triumph engine. The Amphicar is still popular among old car enthusiasts.

The Amphicar 770 is a special and unique car that was produced in the 1960s. It was an amphibious vehicle that could be used on both road and water. Here are some features and details of the Amphicar 770:

  1. Design: The Amphicar 770 had a distinctive and striking design. It had a streamlined body with rounded shapes and a convertible-style roof. It was available in different colors and had an attractive appearance.
  2. Amphibious capabilities: What made the Amphicar 770 so special was its ability to float and sail on water. It was equipped with a watertight body and a propulsion system with a water propeller. With the Amphicar 770 you could drive seamlessly from the road into the water.
  3. Engine: The Amphicar 770 had a rear-mounted 4-cylinder petrol engine with a power of approximately 43 hp. Although not the most powerful engine, it offered sufficient performance both on land and on water.
  4. Performance: On road the Amphicar 770 had a top speed of approximately 110 km/h, while on water it could reach a speed of approximately 10 km/h. It was intended for recreational use and provided a unique and enjoyable experience for the driver and passengers.
  5. Production numbers: Approximately 1961 Amphicar 1968s were produced between 3.878 and 770. They were mainly sold in the United States and Europe. Due to the limited production numbers and its unique features, the Amphicar 770 is now a sought-after collector's item.

The Amphicar 770 remains a fascinating car because of its amphibious capabilities and its place in history as one of the few production cars that could function on both road and water. It is a beloved and rare car that intrigues and appeals to car enthusiasts because of its unique features and charm.
