Pontiac Trans Am

The second generation's debut for the 1970 model year was delayed until February 26, 1970 due to tooling and technical problems; thus the popular designation as a 1970½ model, while the remaining 1969s were listed in early Pontiac literature without model year identification. This generation of Firebirds was only available in coupe form; after the 1969 model year, convertibles were not available until 1989.

Replacing the “coke bottle” style was a more “swoopy” body style, while retaining some traditional elements. The top of the rear window line ran almost straight down to the lip of the trunk lid. The new design was initially characterized by a large C-pillar, until the rear window was enlarged in 1975. Originally, the "wraparound" pillar window covering more of the C-pillar was initially intended as a design, but problems with the rear window's adhesive and seal led to the flat pillar window being used until the redesigned body in 1975. [19] This style became the look that would embody F-body styling for the longest period of the Firebird's life.
