Description
The number "312" represents a 3-ton payload and approximately 120 hp engine power. Mercedes often used this system at the time: the first digit = tonnage, the last two = engine series.
Many drivers called it an "indestructible workhorse." Especially in export countries (Africa, the Middle East), they operated flawlessly for years under tough conditions.
Because of its rounded shape and short nose, drivers sometimes affectionately called it the “Bolneus” (Bulb Nose).
The 312 is often considered the first generation of the "Kurzhauber" (short-nosed) design. This design was later developed into the famous L series (e.g., the L 911, L 1113).
The 312 was built from 1949 until the early 60s. It was one of the first post-war Mercedes trucks, with which Germany rebuilt its transport sector.
Everything about the truck was mechanical and relatively simple. In countries with few garages, a village blacksmith or mechanic could keep it running with basic tools.
