Scania-Vabis wanted a more powerful successor to the successful LBS 75. The growing demand for heavier international transport, especially in Western Europe, required more power and reliability.
The design of the LBS 76 was largely based on the LBS 75, but with an improved DS11 engine (11-litre turbodiesel) and a stronger chassis.
The turbocharger was still relatively new in trucks. The LBS 76 was one of the first heavy-duty European trucks to offer it as standard, resulting in increased power and lower fuel consumption.
This car quickly earned the nickname "Bulldog" among drivers, and if you look at the cabin long enough, you'll see why. Its compact, forward-sliding cab gave it the appearance of a bulldog: low, wide, and powerful.
The LBS 76 is considered an icon from the golden age of international road transport, a period when drivers were on the road for weeks at a time and their truck was literally their second home.
