Scania Vabis LBS76

De Scania-Vabis LBS76 was an advanced truck produced between 1963 and 1968. This truck was an important step in the development of Scania-Vabis and played a crucial role in their export strategy.

The LBS76 was equipped with the Scania-Vabis DS11 engine, a six-cylinder turbodiesel with an output of 240 hp. This engine was coupled to a manual transmission and tandem drive, which contributed to the truck's power and reliability.

🛠️ Development and design

In January 1963, Scania-Vabis introduced the LB76 series, including the LBS76, a forward steering truck with a fixed cab. This configuration was designed to meet the length restrictions introduced in many European countries. The “B” in the name stood for “Bulldog”, the name Scania-Vabis gave to their forward steering vehicles. The LB76 was intended for export markets, where conventional trucks did not always meet length restrictions.

The LBS76 cabin was designed with safety in mind and met the strict Swedish crash standards. This meant, among other things, that the cabin had to be able to withstand a static weight of 15.000 kg on the roof and that the doors had to be able to be opened after an impact without additional force. This made the LBS76 one of the safest trucks of its time.

🚚 Production and use

Approximately 1963 units of the LB1968 series were produced between 2.575 and 76, including this LBS76. In the Netherlands there are still a few examples of the LBS76, often in private ownership or in museums.
