The F88 series was introduced as part of Volvo's “System 8”, an export-oriented program aimed at improving truck technology. The FB88 was a longer wheelbase variant, designed to carry heavier loads.

In 1970 the G88 was introduced, a version of the FB88 with the front axle moved 300 mm further forward, resulting in a larger axle distance and an increased gross vehicle weight of 52,5 tonnes.

Production of the F88 series ended in 1977, with the F10/F12 series being introduced as its successor.
