History of the amphibious car

The Amphicar 770 was a unique vehicle produced in the 1960s. It was an amphibious vehicle, meaning it could travel on land as well as in water. The name “770” referred to its ability to reach 7 miles per hour in the water and 70 miles per hour on land.

The Amphicar was produced in West Germany between 1961 and 1968. It was a striking car that runs on water. This was extremely rare at the time (and still is today). Even with these unique features, the auto boat unfortunately failed to become commercially successful, and only about 4.000 units were produced each surviving amphibious car for sale represents a piece of postwar ingenuity.

Today, these floating cars have become collector's items due to their rarity and unique design. Restored models are sought after worldwide by enthusiasts who want something different than a standard classic. Anyone who sees an Amphicar 770 for sale today, whether in its original or restored condition, knows it's a rare opportunity. Owning an Amphicar is like owning a rolling heritage vehicle, with a story that goes beyond just the technology.

The technology behind the Amphicar was innovative for its time. The vehicle was built with thicker steel plates than conventional cars to make the body rigid and watertight. A bilge pump allowed for the easy drainage of any water that might have entered. Propulsion on water was provided by two propellers at the rear, operated by a separate lever. On land, the four-cylinder engine from the Triumph Herald provided reliable propulsion.

It wasn't a speed demon in traffic, and it wasn't a full-fledged boat on the water, but the combination of both functions makes the Amphicar one of the most idiosyncratic vintage cars ever built.

Love for a unique car model

A very idiosyncratic amphibious car is the Amphicar, a 'fun car' from Germany. In total, just under four thousand were produced from 1960 to 1965 and there are only a few hundred left. More than a hundred of these have already changed hands via Metropole Sales and the company can safely call itself an Amphicar specialist. Metropole's Amphicars can often be seen driving and sailing at events. With a love for amphicars, Roy Bolks organized the last amphicar event in the canals of Amsterdam in 2024.

This passion for the model extends beyond mere sales. The vehicles are selected for character, history, and quality, not based on volume or speed of sale. Buying an Amphicar from Metropole means choosing guidance from people who truly know the vehicle. It's this dedication that draws enthusiasts from all over Europe and beyond to our collection.

What is an Amphicar?

An Amphicar isn't just a car. It's a vehicle completely designed for dual functionality: driving and sailing. No separate adjustments or external parts – everything is integrated into a single design.

The Amphicar is therefore not comparable to a standard classic car. While classic vehicles often tell a story on the asphalt, the Amphicar also tells its story on the water. That makes it unique.

✓ Full-fledged convertible for four people
✓ No trailer needed – just drive into the water
✓ Sailing without a boating license (in many countries, depending on regulations)

Create a Buy Amphicar means choosing something far beyond the ordinary. It's the embodiment of freedom, enjoyment, and character – and an enrichment to any collection or private garage.
