The DKW Schnellaster, also known as the DKW F89 L, was, alongside the DKW F89 passenger car, the first new model from Auto Union after World War II and the first car produced in Ingolstadt following the re-establishment of Auto Union in West Germany. The DKW Schnellaster (sometimes also written as Schnell-Laster) featured a tubular chassis with a front-steering design that was advanced for its time, front-wheel drive, and the two-stroke engine typical of DKW. The technology was derived from the DKW F8. The front wheels were suspended on wishbones and a transverse leaf spring, while the rear wheels used a transverse torsion spring element. The first model was the F89 L with a 688 cm³ engine and a three-speed gearbox, delivering 14,7 kW (20 hp) at 3600 rpm. The front-wheel drive, low-lying chassis, and compact rear axle made many versions possible for a wide range of purposes: minibus, enclosed van, combi, pickup (also as a tipper), sales vehicle, ambulance, livestock transporter, and also as a chassis-cab for special bodywork.
