The Dodge Polara is a car that was introduced in the United States for the 1960 model year as Dodge's top model in the large car segment. Following the introduction of the Dodge Custom 880 in 1962, the name Polara indicated a step down from Dodge's most luxurious model; the Polara was downsized that year to what was effectively a mid-size car. In its various versions, the name Polara was used by Dodge until 1973, when its position in the Dodge lineup was taken over by the Dodge Monaco. The name Polara refers to the Polaris star, a marketing ploy to capitalize on the excitement surrounding the space race in the early 60s. For the 1965 model year, Chrysler placed the Polara back on the Chrysler C-platform, which was shared with Chrysler and Plymouth models. The Polara, which was once again offered in a full range of body styles (sedans, hardtops, station wagons, etc.), effectively replaced the 880 and remained a step below the Custom 880.
