The Land Rover Defender is a four-wheel drive off-road vehicle from the British brand Land Rover that was produced from 1983 until early 2016. The design is based on the earlier Land Rover Series 1, 2, and 3. The name Defender has only been used since 1990 to distinguish the model from the more luxurious Land Rover Discovery. The Defender was developed for use in extreme conditions. The car is equipped with coil springs and features permanent four-wheel drive. The central differential can be locked for optimal traction off-road. The Defender does not have a monocoque but a body-on-chassis construction, allowing all parts of the vehicle to be easily replaced, often by hand. This is ideal when field maintenance is required. The vehicle no longer met European standards, and therefore the end of production was announced in 2015. On January 29, 2016, the last Defender rolled off the assembly line.
